Fiesta ST Background: The hot hatch market of the mid 2000’s was a very different place from the one the much-loved and sorely missed XR2i bowed out of in 1993. The Clio 182 and Mini Cooper Works where the new pretenders to the XR2i’s former throne and would take some shifting. However, buoyed by reclaiming the RS Turbos crown with the Focus RS, Ford formed TeamRS and got to work on what was now known as the supermini segment and came out fighting. The ST150 Fiesta was to be the first project for Ford’s TeamRS as they set about to reclaim their title as the kings of hot hatches. The group parts bin was raided and the 2.0L Duratec from the Mondeo was shoehorned into the engine bay at a 6 degree angle whilst freer flowing inlet and exhaust manifolds helped to up the power to 148bhp. A lighter flywheel was added to sharpen the throttle response and a sports exhaust to increase the drama. To keep all this on the road the suspension was tweaked and then tweaked some more whilst the Focus ST170 was raided for the brake calipers.The styling was equally important, the fiesta was certainly handsome but it wasn’t mean. Bright finish 11 spoke 17” alloy wheels were added alongside a body- coloured Sports Aero Kit comprising of: chunkier bumpers and sills, high intake front grill and a jutting boot spoiler to complete the look. The inside was treated to half leather sports seats and a smattering of ST branding.The ST150 was ready for battle, cue the marketing blurb and an elaborate international launch in the Tuscan hills. It was claimed that the ST150 lapped Ford’s Lommel test track in the same time as its big brother the Focus ST170 while the phrase “the ultimate in small car handling” was used for the press packs. The “Bring it on!!!” tagline for the website was equally bullish. Provenance:Built in 2007 to UK Specification and registered on the 12/05/07 by Bristol Street Motors of Birmingham to its one and only keeper. The vehicle was sensibly specified in Panther Black Metallic with the optional Reflex and Viability Packs and perhaps most tellingly given the purchasers maturity without the ST Graphics packs. As their first brand new car purchase, they would go on to cosset the car for almost 14 years. As a Semi-retired Mechanic, he was well aware of the short comings of some Main Dealer’s servicing standards and knew that they would fail to live up to his expectations. The 17inch 11 spoke ST bright finish alloys are totally unmarked and fitted with factory correct Pirelli P Zeros. The Factory bodystyling, spoiler, bumpers, lights, badges and decals are all correct and free from any damage or discoloration. The glass is all factory with the correct Ford markings including the windscreen. All factory stickers are also present and undamaged. This really is a cosseted time warp car Engine Bay and Underneath:Perhaps even more remarkable than the incredible condition of the paint work and trim is the underside of the vehicle. It could easily have just rolled straight off the factory floor, with factory wax and markings still in place it is an incredible testament to the care this ST has received. The black and blue combo extends to the Passion Blue/Ebony dash too and perfectly complements the gleaming exterior paint work. It would not be unreasonable to surmise that the rear seats have never been sat in, the as new rigidity of the folding mechanism would certainly support this. The switchgear is all in superb order with no scratches or marking to the trim. Fitting with the incredible mileage the often tired, high contact areas of the cabin such as the ST Specific steering wheel and gear knob show almost no signs of any use. The carpets are perfect throughout having been protected from new by an original set of black overmats. Pleasingly the Ford 6006 audio with 6 CD dash stacker is still present and the parcel shelf is correct and unadorned with any aftermarket speakers. The boot area is effectively unused with absolutely no signs of loading damage or wear whatsoever. On the Road:Perhaps unsparingly given the low miles and impeccable upkeep it drives with a time warp tautness you that you could only find with a low mileage perfectly maintained example. The ST Boasts 148bhp with a kerb weight of just over 1100kg giving a useful 132bhp per tonne and respectable claimed 0-60mph time of 7.9 seconds and on to a top speed of 129mph. Not startling by modern standards but where this ST truly stands proud from the rest of its peers was in the handling. TeamRS’ input certainly paid dividends and the ST offers superb visceral driving experience that many more modern and often vastly more powerful cars simply cannot replicate.
